What is a Percentage?
A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. The word itself comes from the Latin "per centum," meaning "by the hundred." When we say 25 percent, we mean 25 out of every 100, or one quarter of a whole. Percentages provide a universal way to compare proportions, growth, and relative values regardless of the underlying scale, which is why they appear everywhere from shopping discounts and tax rates to exam scores, survey results, and financial reports.
Because percentages normalize values to a common base of 100, they make comparisons far easier than raw numbers. A score of 45 out of 60 on one test and 80 out of 100 on another are hard to compare directly, but converting both to percentages — 75% and 80% — instantly reveals which performance was stronger. This normalization is what makes percentages so valuable in education, business, science, and everyday decision making.
Understanding percentages also helps you reason about change. When prices, populations, or investments shift, the absolute change rarely tells the full story. A $10 increase on a $20 item feels enormous, while the same $10 increase on a $2,000 item feels negligible. Percentage change captures this intuition mathematically, giving you a meaningful measure of how significant any change truly is relative to its starting point.
The Percentage Formulas
X is what % of Y = (X / Y) × 100
% Change = ((New − Original) / Original) × 100
Mode 1: What is 15% of 200? → (15 / 100) × 200 = 30
Mode 2: 30 is what % of 200? → (30 / 200) × 100 = 15%
Mode 3: % change from 80 to 100? → ((100 − 80) / 80) × 100 = +25%
